MAJOR NEWS

Baseball Returns To Washington

9/28/04.... Major League Baseball will announce Wednesday that Washington will be the new home of the Montreal Expos, The Associated Press has learned. A city official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Washington has been notified by Major League Baseball of the impending announcement that will return the national pastime to the nation's capital for the first time in 33 years.

The city is planning its own news conference at a downtown location Wednesday afternoon, the official said.

The announcement will come one day before the 33rd anniversary of the Washington Senators' final game. The Senators moved to Texas after the 1971 season, which was also the last time a major league team changed cities.

Baseball has been looking for a new home for the Expos since the financially troubled team was bought by the other 29 major league owners in 2002.

Las Vegas; Norfolk, Va.; Monterrey, Mexico; Portland, Ore.; and Northern Virginia also made bids, but Washington clearly took the lead during negotiations over recent weeks. Read more...

Washington Wizzards trade for Antawn Jamison

6/24/04.... Antawn Jamison is moving from a team that won 52 games last season to one that hasn't made the playoffs since 1997 -- and he couldn't be happier about it.

``I can't stress how excited I am to be part of this organization,'' Jamison said at a news conference Monday. He was traded to the Washington Wizards by the Dallas Mavericksx last Thursday. ``This has been six years in the making.'' The 6-9 Jamison was acquired by the Wizards for Jerry Stackhouse, Christian Laettner and the rights to the fifth pick in last week's draft -- Wisconsin point guard Devin Harris.

Jamison averaged 14.8 points and 6.3 rebounds in the 2003-04 season, when he was named the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year. In his six-year NBA career, the first five with the Golden State Warriors, Jamison has averaged 19.1 points and 7.2 rebounds. He's twice scored 51 points in a game and has the NBA's longest consecutive game streak at 328. While Jamison came off the bench last season, Washington coach Eddie Jordan sees him starting along with Kwame Brown at forward. Jamison said he's ideal for the young Wizards. ``This is definitely the best situation so far in my career,'' he said. Read more...

Mayor makes pitch for Washington baseball

5/7/04.... Baseball officials wanted to know where the money is coming from. City officials wanted to know if baseball is serious about locating in Washington. When it was over, both sides gave positive reviews to Thursday's meeting in which Mayor Anthony Williams explained his new plan for a 100-percent taxpayer-funded stadium if the Montreal Expos are moved to the nation's capital. ``If we weren't serious about Washington, D.C., we would not be here,'' Major League Baseball chief operating officer John McHale said in a rare public statement. ``We consider it to have been a positive afternoon.''

Orioles Make Major Winter Moves

2/24/04.... The General Manager duo of Jim Beattie and Mike Flanagan has made four huge moves in their efforts to build a competitive team during the 2003-2004 off season. They have snatched three of the biggest fish in the pond. They also reacquired Sidney Ponson. I don't think these will make this team much better.

Return of the King
Joe Gibbs Back as Redskins Coach

1/8/04....The Washington Redskins dipped into their glorious past yesterday in the latest attempt to repair their struggling team, as Joe Gibbs agreed to a five-year contract to return as head coach of the franchise he led to three Super Bowl victories. The decision by Gibbs, 63, to return to the Redskins' sideline after an 11-year absence was met with surprise around the National Football League and delight from the team's fans. He became a Washington sports icon by taking the Redskins to Super Bowl triumphs after the 1982, '87 and '91 seasons. But he retired from football after the 1992 season and settled into a less-stressful life centered on his family and his successful auto racing teams.

Maryland Mauls West Virginia 41-7 in Gator Bowl

1/1/04...Terps notched their third-straight 10-win season and Scott McBrien threw for a career-high 381 yards to help No. 23 Maryland to a 41-7 victory over No. 20 West Virginia in the Gator Bowl on Thursday. This was a rematch of a regular-season game that was almost as lopsided. Playing against the team he left in 2001, McBrien threw for three scores and ran for another. His teammate, Steve Suter, returned a punt for a touchdown and made a highlight-reel catch to help the once-downtrodden Terrapins (10-3)reach 10 wins for the third straight year under coach Ralph Friedgen, aka "The Fridge." Only Texas, Oklahoma, Miami and Washington State can boast a similar three-year stretch. "How long has it been since Maryland has been mentioned in the same breath with those teams?" Friedgen said. "That's how far we've come." They've done it thanks in part to West Virginia. Counting the 34-7 win in the regular season, the Terps have defeated the Mountaineers four times over the last three years by an average score of 35-13.
